TwoCan Inclusive Theatre<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

In 2023 TwoCan Inclusive Theatre Company<\/a> approached Resonant Architecture as community-focused architects to assist with their transformation of a Victorian church building to serve as their dedicated theatre and workshop space, marking the beginning of ambitious future plans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An inclusive facility for Gloucestershire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The long term redevelopment project extends beyond the confines of a performance stage, delving into educational and community programs to dismantle preconceived notions about disability.  Through meticulous research and community engagement the project strives to dismantle participation barriers, expanding its reach into new areas while fostering an environment where families are encouraged to actively take part. The brief embodies a commitment to flexibility over formality, embracing theatre in all its formats and genres while challenging perceptions of disability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability is a cornerstone of the upgrade and restoration of the existing building. Natural breathable insulation and internal finishes will both literally and figuratively improve the warmth of the space, while protecting its users from harmful VOCs<\/a>. The redevelopment includes plans for a sensory garden, training opportunities in the kitchen, and a commitment to overcoming spatial challenges for optimal utilisation. The first milestone was passed in 2024, which saw planning permission granted for a new specialist therapy outbuilding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The small kitchen area will undergo a transformation into an inclusive culinary hub and caf\u00e9, open to the community. Partnering with organisations like Wiggly<\/a>, TwoCan aims to host a variety of food events, fostering independence skills and providing kitchen support for for those who need it.\u00a0The redesign introduces adjustable workstations and sensory-friendly finishes to accommodate diverse needs, allowing for the integration of wheelchairs and fostering an inclusive learning and dining space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The divided hall space, currently a canvas awaiting transformation, will become a versatile performance hub. Equipped with thermal and acoustic insulation, stage lighting infrastructure, and accessibility features, it aims to challenge and excite participants and audiences alike. The design envisions a dynamic space with interactive lighting and sound beam facilities, aligning with TwoCan’s commitment to innovation and inclusivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two small toilets and a storage room added to the Victorian structure in the twentieth century will undergo a reconfiguration to create fully accessible toilets and a changing area with hoist facilities. Prioritising accessibility ensures that the architectural design reflects the ethos of TwoCan in providing a welcoming and supportive environment for all individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As this very unique project takes flight we are honoured to have been chosen as architects serving the theatre community to create spaces that transcend physical boundaries and embrace the richness of human diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
