Cambridge House Extension<\/h1>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The owners of this Edwardian house in Chesterton<\/a>, Cambridge wanted to extend to the side of the building to create space and bring more light into the dark interior. The house had previously been extended to the rear, making the rear rooms internal and lacking windows or doors to connect them to the outside.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The solution maximised glazing while at the same time maintaining privacy and thermal insulation. To achieve this an extension was constructed using structural, frameless glazing to the roof and garden-facing wall, while the boundary walls were highly insulated and constructed from solid brick and blockwork. The result is a set of private spaces that are bathed in light, with seamless views of the garden, sky and trees.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In order to structurally ‘free’ the extension and avoid cumbersome pieces of steel connecting the new wall to the existing house, the new external wall was cantilevered from its foundations, making it a self-supporting structure and allowing light weight frameless glazing to be the only enclosing element.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The interior of the house underwent extensive remodelling to update services, fit new joinery, open out the rooms and bring more light into the home. A new kitchen was fitted and a bespoke dresser and shelving were designed as part of the architectural services.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
