Extension, West Cambridge
A contemporary house extension to a 1980s surburban home on the outskirts of Cambridge. Its owner, a local university fellow and swimming enthusiast required a new dining and living space set within the garden which would also be home to a new swimming pool. Views of the garden, daylight, and measures against overheating were desired.
The modern influence of nearby Wolfson College, and the particular geometry of the original house informed the extension’s form. Due to a south facing aspect roof overhangs, automatic blinds and solar-control glass were employed to mitigate overheating from the strongest summer sun.
Internally the house underwent extensive structural alterations to provide a new kitchen, create more open space and make use of the increased light entering from the new elevation.
